Huntsville Pest Animal Trapping Tip of the Month:
Home Remedies to Keep Away Huntsville Snakes
Snakes are scary reptiles and the sight of them slithering nearby is enough to frighten you. In reality they help humans by eating rodents and pests. But, ironically the very mention is enough to cause a panic attack in some. Though only a few species are poisonous it is difficult and risky to identify them. A bite of a poisonous snake can cause death within a few hours or paralysis. The presence of snakes is never welcome in your garden or home. With proper care and some lifestyle changes your home can be snake free.

Remove source of food
Snakes themselves do not want to come near human habitation. The only reason is availability of food. Snakes feed on rodents and other smaller animals. If your home is also home to rats then you are sure to attract snakes. Secure and protect backyard animals and pets if any. Huntsville snakes can snatch eggs from poultry farms or eat small bunnies. Small animals are also potential source of food.

Keep the yard clean
Snakes look for places to hide. The vegetation and grass in the yard offers many such places. Keep the grasses trimmed and the yard swept and clean. Avoid having wood piles, dead leaves, debris and old unattended pieces. Snakes can even hide under garbage cans or rock piles.

Avoid damp areas
Snakes love damp areas. Try to keep the yard dry and resolve drainage and seepage problems if any. Alabama snakes live in nests or can live in any place which hides it. If you find a nest discard it when the snake is away. Snake eggs if found must also be discarded. Baby snakes are independent and do not need their mother to sit on them to hatch.

Repellents
A mixture of naphthalene balls and cat litter is a good repellent and keeps Huntsville snakes away. Chemical repellents are also available. Do not use them if you have children or pets. They can cause harm. Natural repellents like cayenne pepper, cinnamon and clove oil are often used. Repellents have to be used often as their effect does not last long.

Secure your building and yard
Buildings have to be free from holes and cracks. These offer entry points to rodents and other small animals which may invite Alabama snakes. They must be closed. Vents and other openings must also be frequently checked. Snake proof fencing is a very good solution to prevent entry of snakes. This is expensive but more permanent and necessary if you live in an environment known to have snakes. Fence must be made of fine mesh and buried at least 6” into the ground. They must be at least 2-4 ft high. Fences must be periodically checked to ensure that it is not damaged by other animals. In case a snake has already entered your house it is important to get it out. Even if it is not poisonous it is better that you are well covered when you approach it. Thick pants, long sleeve shirts shoes with thick socks are essential. The best option is to leave the door open and allow it to go out or push it with a broom. It is best to call an expert if you are not confident of handling the situation.
